Communications Coordinator

The "Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana's Communal Rangelands" Project funded by GCF aims to utilize collective management of livestock and ecosystems to restore Botswana's communal rangelands, increasing the climate resilience of vulnerable populations and reducing GHG emissions. Over 8 years, the project will undertake activities in 104 villages in Ngamiland, Kgalagadi, and Bobirwa landscape areas covering six administrative districts of Botswana. In these three areas, the Project is targeting improved management of 4.6 million hectares of rangelands.

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Gaborone, Botswana

Reporting to the Head of Communications, the Communications Coordinator will support the implementation of the project's communications strategy, ensuring effective stakeholder engagement, community mobilization, project visibility, and documentation of project impacts. The role is responsible for coordinating field-level communications, community mobilization, supporting campaign implementation, managing media and digital platforms, and producing knowledge products. The Communications Coordinator will work closely with the Head of Communications, project teams, partners, and communities to deliver high-quality communication outputs, support behaviour change initiatives, and amplify project results locally and globally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications Strategy Implementation
* Support execution of the project communications strategy and annual workplans.
* Coordinate development of communication materials aligned with project outputs and donor requirements.
* Support integration of technical project information into reports and communication products.

Media Relations & Advocacy
* Assist in building relationships with local and regional media.
* Support planning and coordination of media events, press releases, and public announcements.
* Promote project visibility around key initiatives such as job creation, climate resilience, and sustainable livestock practices.

Community Outreach and Behavior Change Communications
* Support implementation of community outreach campaigns across project areas in collaboration with partners and agencies.
* Assist in behavior change and community mobilization efforts, including awareness on climate change, gender inclusion, and sustainable rangeland management.
* Coordinate community engagement activities such as roadshows and stakeholder sensitization events.

Content Development and Storytelling
* Develop high-quality communication materials including: Success Stories ("Voices from the Field", Case Studies, Newsletters, brochures and reports.
* Capture and document field activities, including interviews with farmers, herders, community leaders, and stakeholders
* Monitor digital engagement and recommend improvements

Knowledge Management and Documentation
* Support Village Development Committees (VDCs) in documenting project progress (reports, scrapbooks, online content).
* Maintain organized archives of communication materials, photos, videos, and publications.
* Contribute to development of lessons learned and annual communication reports.

Training and Capacity Building
* Assist in organizing and delivering training for community groups, facilitators, and partners on communication tools and storytelling.
* Support knowledge-sharing workshops and documentation requirements for institutional engagement.

Coordination and Support
* Liaise with project teams, partners, and service providers to ensure timely delivery of communication outputs.
* Support procurement and management of communication consultants or agencies where required.
* Provide logistical and coordination support for communication-related events and activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS
* Normal office environment.
* Based in Gaborone with regular travel to project sites in remote rural areas.
* Frequent field visits to support documentation and stakeholder engagement.
* Flexibility to work outside standard hours during events, campaigns, or media engagements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
* 2 to 4 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or development sector.
* Strong Microsoft Excel skills; familiarity with accounting principles, processes, and standards
* Proven experience in content creation, storytelling, and media engagement.
* Strong writing and editing skills in English; Setswana proficiency is an advantage.
* Experience managing social media platforms and digital content.
* Strong organizational and coordination skills, with ability to manage multiple priorities.
* Proficiency in MS Office, digital tools, and basic graphic/design platforms (e.g., Canva).
* Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including rural communities.
* Valid Class B driver's license

Preferred
* Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, or related field.
* Work experience and existing networks in agriculture, NGOs, community development, local authorities or government at district level.
* Experience in climate change, conservation, agriculture, or development projects.
* Experience in behaviour change communication (BCC) campaigns.
* Photography, videography, or multimedia production skills.
* Familiarity with donor-funded projects and reporting standards
* Demonstrated experience in remote/under-resourced environments and Botswana's project areas.
