Vital Strategies is an international public health organization whose programs strengthen public health systems and address the world's leading causes of illness, injury and death, working in 73 countries. The organization is expanding its Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, collaborating with governmental agencies in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to strengthen health systems and build local expertise in childhood lead exposure.
The Environment and Health Data Scientist will serve as the data science specialist supporting the development of integrated data systems to inform public health planning and policy. The role develops tools and guidance and supports country teams to build data platforms that integrate information on health, the environment, and populations to understand lead exposure risk. Responsibilities include inventorying data sources, managing and aligning datasets, analyzing, visualizing, and automating datasets, overseeing local data systems contractors, and supporting data integration across systems and governments.
Duties span data integration and analysis (developing indicators/indices related to lead exposure, designing analytical datasets, dashboards and visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, R Markdown; defining database structures for blood lead level data), stakeholder engagement with NGOs and Ministries of Health and Environment, technical support and training, and program implementation and coordination.
Qualifications: Master's degree in computer science, data science, information technology, statistics, public health or related field; 6-7 years professional experience in data science/analysis applied to public health or environmental health; experience with large/health surveillance datasets, government health/environmental departments, data warehousing and visualization (Azure/Fabric, SQL-Server, Power BI, Tableau, Shiny) and statistical software (R, SAS, SPSS, Stata). Preferred: DHIS2, geospatial tools (QGIS, ArcGIS), advanced R/Python/SQL, AI tools. Based in Addis Ababa on a full-time hybrid schedule; qualified candidates from the US and India also considered. Salary range in Addis Ababa is USD $25,700 to USD $33,000 depending on experience.
