Carbon Mapper is a non-profit organization based in Pasadena, CA with the mission to drive greenhouse gas emission reductions by making methane and carbon dioxide data accessible and actionable. The organization leverages remote sensing technology to detect, pinpoint, and quantify methane and CO2 emissions at the scale of individual facilities, making all data publicly available for non-commercial use on the Carbon Mapper Data Portal.

Carbon Mapper is seeking a Research Scientist to support algorithm development and application work within the Science Team. This role contributes to a range of near-term and next-generation projects at the intersection of Carbon Mapper's science, product development, and mission-driven impact, including opportunities to publish findings internally and externally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop measurement-informed emission inventories across a range of sectors
  • Conduct multi-scale analyses integrating top-down and bottom-up data streams (e.g., area-flux mappers with point-source imagers)
  • Characterize instrument performance of next-generation remote sensing measurements
  • Expand Carbon Mapper's analytical reach into new emission sectors
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in physical sciences, environmental sciences, applied mathematics, earth science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more methane emission sectors (e.g., oil & gas, coal, waste, agriculture)
  • Experience using remote sensing data for emission quantification
  • Ability to work independently on complex projects while collaborating effectively in a team
  • Skilled at managing and prioritizing multiple concurrent projects
Must-Have Skills: developing measurement-informed methane emission inventories; proficiency in methane inverse modeling at regional to global scales; methane quantification at local scales (e.g., plumes); familiarity with atmospheric chemistry and transport modeling.

Compensation: base salary range of $100,000 - $135,000/year, plus benefits including medical, dental, vision, generous time-off, and professional development.
