The Finance Officer is responsible for managing Internews' daily financial operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, maintaining reliable financial records, and supporting effective cash management. This is a key operational role on the finance team, covering accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, banking activities, procurement support, and routine financial administration. Working under the direction of the Controller, the Finance Officer ensures financial processes are completed efficiently and accurately, in line with organizational policies, internal controls, and applicable regulations, and collaborates with the CFO, Controller, Senior Project Finance Manager, and operational departments.
Key responsibilities:
- Accounts Payable: process vendor invoices, payment requests, and expense reimbursements; verify approvals, coding, and documentation; prepare payment batches; respond to vendor inquiries.
- Accounts Receivable: process customer invoices and billings, monitor and follow up on overdue balances, support collections, and assist with revenue tracking and reconciliation.
- Cash Management and Banking: monitor daily cash activity, perform bank reconciliations, assist with cash forecasting and liquidity reporting, and support deposits and electronic payments.
- Payroll Administration: coordinate payroll processing, review transactions for accuracy, ensure proper coding and allocation of payroll expenses, and liaise with external payroll providers.
- Procurement Support: review purchase requests, monitor purchase orders and invoices, and ensure expenditures are properly authorized and recorded.
- Financial Recordkeeping and Reporting: maintain transaction records, prepare routine reports, assist with account reconciliations, month-end close, and audits.
- Grant and Project Finance Support: support the Senior Project Finance Manager with project transactions, expense tracking, documentation of restricted funding, project billing, and reimbursement requests.
- Process Improvement and Collaboration: identify and recommend improvements to financial processes, and provide professional support to internal and external stakeholders while protecting confidential information.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, or related financial operations.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, or cash management.
- Experience with QuickBooks or enterprise financial systems.
- Experience in nonprofit, government, grant-funded, or project-based organizations preferred.
- Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required; Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, communication, and customer service skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality.
Details: Level 3, P2; salary $70,000 to $80,000; fully remote (Washington DC); exempt, non-term; reports to the Controller.
