Internews is seeking a Controller to plan, direct, and manage the organization's accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial records and reporting. This is a fully remote position (Washington DC based, remote in the United States) reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and supervising a Finance Officer. Salary: $110,000 to $120,000.
Key responsibilities:
- Direct and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial recordkeeping.
- Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and prepare financial statements and reports for executive leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders.
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective internal accounting controls and ensure compliance with GAAP, grant requirements, and federal, state, and local reporting obligations.
- Coordinate annual financial statement audits and other external audits, serving as primary liaison with external auditors.
- Assist the CFO with annual budget development, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Review cash management, banking, investment, and debt accounting, and ensure proper accounting for restricted and designated funds.
- Administer accounting software and financial systems, and support implementation of new tools.
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate accounting staff; collaborate with the Finance Officer and Senior Project Finance Manager on grant and project accounting.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of Controller or Senior Accountant experience in the nonprofit or NGO sector, ideally in organizations exceeding $25M in annual budget.
- Deep understanding of nonprofit accounting, funder compliance, and grant management with varied and complex funders.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field required; Master's preferred. CPA strongly desired.
- Experience preparing audited financial statements and managing month-end and year-end close.
- Thorough knowledge of GAAP, internal control frameworks, and audit practices.
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills; supervisory experience preferred.
