Building support from individual donors and values-aligned corporate supporters is an increasingly important part of ILGA World's long-term sustainability and independence. As part of ILGA World's 2025–2029 strategic plan, strengthening the organisation's internal capacity and resilience depends not only on programme funding, but also on flexible income that can help sustain core functions, respond quickly to emerging needs, and support movement infrastructure over time.
ILGA World's fundraising context is shaped by a rapidly changing global environment for LGBTIQ human rights. Government funding is increasingly influenced by political shifts and geopolitical priorities, while many philanthropic foundations are moving towards shorter grant cycles and more restrictive requirements. Corporate giving has also become more complex, with some companies reducing visible support for LGBTIQ rights in response to politicised backlash. These trends increase volatility for the movement and underline the importance of diversifying income and growing sources of support that are less dependent on public funding cycles.
Within this context, individual giving offers a pathway to build a broader base of solidarity and predictable support. By developing clear donor journeys, strong stewardship practices, and accessible ways to give, ILGA World can grow a community of supporters who contribute to the organisation's long-term sustainability. ILGA World already uses platforms such as GlobalGiving, including features that enable U.S. tax receipting and UK Gift Aid. Strengthening how these options are communicated to donors, and ensuring that giving is simple and trustworthy, can help remove barriers and increase conversion and retention.
Corporate support can also help strengthen ILGA World's sustainability, but it must be approached with care. ILGA World's corporate support work is grounded in values-led decision-making, ethical screening, and due diligence. This ensures that corporate supporters align with ILGA World's mission and that relationships do not create harm, compromise independence, or place undue burdens on staff or members. In practice, this means focusing on a smaller number of higher-fit corporate supporters, prioritising longer-term commitments, and ensuring clear internal processes to assess and manage reputational risk.
The Individual Giving and Corporate Support Specialist contributes to this work by building repeatable systems and practices that strengthen donor experience and stewardship, improve coordination between fundraising, communications, and finance, and support a culture of philanthropy that reflects ILGA World's queer feminist and relational values. The role helps ensure that fundraising communications are accurate, non-extractive, and grounded in solidarity and collective care, while strengthening the internal systems needed to manage and grow support responsibly.
The aims of individual giving and corporate support at ILGA World are to:
* Grow flexible, predictable income from individual donors through annual appeals, monthly giving, and strong stewardship that builds trust and long-term commitment
* Strengthen donor experience by improving how ILGA World communicates giving options and donor benefits, including clear information on U.S. tax receipting and UK Gift Aid via GlobalGiving
* Build repeatable supporter journeys and practical tools that enable ILGA World to run 2 to 3 high-quality campaigns each year without undue operational burden
* Develop a pipeline for mid-size and major gifts, supporting relational cultivation and long-term donor retention in ways that are consistent with ILGA World's values and duty of care
* Stabilise and grow values-aligned corporate support through ethical screening, due diligence, and clear internal decision-making processes that protect ILGA World's credibility and independence
* Strengthen coordination across fundraising, communications, and finance to ensure timely acknowledgements, accurate record keeping, appropriate data protection, and consistent reporting
* Uphold ILGA World's queer feminist and relational values by using non-extractive communications, respecting dignity and safety, and ensuring accountability to communities and the movement.
