Background of the Assignment/ Project
The Ayeyarwady Delta is a critical coastal ecosystem supporting diverse flora and fauna, including important mangrove forests. Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, livelihoods, and reducing communities’ vulnerability to climate-related risks. WWF-Myanmar supports community-led mangrove conservation through Mangrove-Friendly Aquaculture (MFA), particularly mud-crab farming, which supports livelihoods while contributing to mangrove conservation and restoration. As part of its ongoing efforts, WWF-MM developed a New Business Model for MFA (Mud-crab) Business, mapped local supply chains, and developed customized business plans for 20 community-based enterprises in target villages in Pyapon Township.
Market assessments and buyer–seller engagements revealed that major buyers, processors, and exporters in Yangon prefer collective buying mechanisms, as purchasing from scattered smallholders creates logistical and supply chain challenges. To address this gap, a Business Model Incubation Phase (Phase III) is required to establish collective-buying Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs) capable of bulk handling, quality sorting, and direct market delivery.
