Village Capital is a US-domiciled 501(c)(3) that delivers entrepreneur support programs and manages blended pools of investment capital. Since 2009 it has supported over 2,000 startups that have raised over $9 billion in follow-on investment capital. The Business Development Manager is a full-time, fixed-term (12 months) remote role, open to candidates in the United States, Kenya and the United Kingdom. It reports to the Business Development Director.
At Village Capital, business development means raising grant funding and catalytic investment capital, not traditional sales or nonprofit fundraising. The role sits at the intersection of international development fundraising, blended finance and impact investing. It independently owns the end-to-end BD function, from prospecting and opportunity qualification through proposal development, CRM management, collateral creation and reporting. It acts as the operational backbone of the team so the Director can focus on strategic partnerships and complex opportunities.
Responsibilities:
- Lead generation, prospecting and outreach: research and identify funding prospects across private philanthropy, family offices, foundations, corporations, bilateral and multilateral organizations and high-net-worth individuals. Build and grow a structured pipeline, prepare prospect lists and briefs for events, and run sequenced outreach.
- Proposal and concept note development: own the full drafting cycle from RFP/CfP screening to final submission, including procurement registrations and deadline tracking. Maintain reusable proposal content and templates.
- Collateral and communications support: develop funder-facing one-pagers, decks and briefing materials, and produce pipeline summaries and draft board reporting.
- CRM management: keep the CRM accurate and current as the system of record for all BD activity, generate pipeline reports, and flag stale records and data gaps.
- BD reporting and team support: coordinate proposal inputs with cross-functional teams and support funding renewals.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in proposal development, grant writing and lead generation, or business development at the intersection of blended finance, impact investing and private philanthropy.
- Direct exposure to blended finance, impact investors, family offices and systems change funders is preferred. Experience with bilateral/multilateral funders alone is not sufficient.
- Ability to independently draft, edit and submit high-quality proposals and concept notes in response to RFPs and Calls for Proposals.
- Strong research skills, CRM proficiency, and strong document and deadline management.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in international development, communications, business, public policy or a related field.
Compensation: Kenya Ksh4,500,000 - 5,500,000 plus a monthly health allowance; United Kingdom £50,000 - £60,000 plus a monthly health allowance; United States $70,000 - $85,000 plus health benefits and a 401(k) with up to a 3% match. The role is fully remote with flexible PTO and stipends for professional development, wellness, remote work, phone and internet.
HOW TO APPLY:
Submit your resume and a one-page pitch (max. 500 words, PDF) that replaces a cover letter. The pitch must answer three parts under these headings: (1) Your win (approx. 150 words): one grant, investment or partnership you helped secure, naming the funder or funder type, the capital type and approximate amount, and what you personally did. (2) Your pitch for Village Capital (approx. 250 words): choose one real private foundation, family office, impact investor, corporate or high-net-worth-backed vehicle you believe should fund Village Capital, and write the opening pitch you would send them. (3) Why you (approx. 100 words). Applications without the pitch, or with a standard cover letter instead, will not be reviewed.
