Humanity & Inclusion (HI) is an independent and impartial aid organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster, alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations. HI Afghanistan operates from Kabul with offices in Herat, Kunduz and Kandahar, and employs around 450 national and 9 international staff.
Under the line management of the Rehabilitation Specialist, the Assistive Technology (AT) Technical Officer provides specialized technical support to strengthen the availability, accessibility, quality and sustainability of assistive technology services and supplies, focusing primarily on wheelchairs and positioning devices (e.g. CP chairs). The position is based in Kabul, with occasional travel to other provinces, for a four-month assignment.
Main responsibilities:
- AT market and supplier analysis: assess the technical capacity of pre-selected local workshops to produce wheelchairs and positioning devices; provide on-the-job coaching on production, quality, design, assembly, fitting and finishing; identify equipment gaps.
- AT product quality and technical review: support the development and improvement of wheelchair and CP chair designs suited to the local context; establish technical specifications, quality criteria and quality-control measures.
- Supply chain and procurement technical support: guide workshops on production planning, costing, pricing, marketing and business models; improve efficiency, sustainability and continuity of local production.
- Technical support and capacity building: deliver training, coaching and mentoring for workshop staff and rehabilitation stakeholders; develop practical technical resources and tools.
- Documentation and recommendations: document findings, lessons learnt and remaining gaps; prepare a handover package.
Profile:
- Bachelor's degree or professional qualification in Physical and Functional Rehabilitation, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Assistive Technology or related fields.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience, including demonstrated experience in assistive technology, particularly wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
- Strong experience in AT product assessment, selection, quality assurance, technical specifications and fitting.
- Practical experience in AT market analysis, supplier assessment, sourcing and supply-chain management, preferably in complex or resource-constrained settings.
- Experience in training, coaching or mentoring rehabilitation professionals is desirable.
- Excellent written and spoken English; working knowledge of Dari and Pashto desirable.
Conditions: 4-month international contract starting 1 January 2027; salary from 2,346 EUR gross/month depending on experience; per diem 599 EUR net/month; hardship allowance 500 EUR net/month; 25 days paid leave per year; R&R 5 days every 8 weeks; medical coverage, pension scheme and repatriation insurance; collective housing provided; unaccompanied position.
