The Accounting and Audit Manager leads the org-wide Accounting Department, maintaining the integrity of accounting data and producing high-quality financial reports. The role is responsible for day-to-day accounting for headquarters' financial transactions; developing, implementing and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures consistent with US GAAP; and maintaining and improving financial controls, including general accounting, investment accounting, subgranting, grantmaking, tax-exempt compliance, banking, payroll and benefits. The role works with HQ and closely with Asylum Access Mexico, Thailand and Malaysia staff. Reports to the Director of Finance and Operations.
Key responsibilities:
- General Accounting and Reporting (65%): HQ accounting for cash, investments, receivables, payables, fixed assets, accruals, revenue and general ledger; supervise related activities for AAMX, AAM and AAT; bank reconciliations, intercompany transactions, monthly/quarterly/annual closes, journal entries; document accounting policies and strengthen internal controls; maintain chart of accounts; support cash flow projections.
- Audit and Tax Compliance (20%): manage the annual US audit end to end; run quarterly internal audits of subsidiaries; assist with IRS 990, NY 500 and California filings; oversee national-level external audits; reconcile Form 941 payroll tax returns; implement auditor recommendations.
- Additional (15%): administer the accounting system; develop and deliver financial and accounting training for staff.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA or equivalent; knowledge of US GAAP for nonprofits; 5 years of related accounting experience; experience with Microsoft Dynamics and strong Excel skills; bilingual in Spanish and English; strong initiative, attention to detail, cultural competence and organizational skills.
Preferred: fund accounting; consolidation of accounting books; leading audits with multiple subsidiaries; training non-financial staff; experience with refugee-led or community-led organizations.
