Director, Accounting (Controller Department)

The Urban Institute is a research-to-impact institution working to improve lives and strengthen communities through evidence and solutions. Its Controller Department seeks an experienced, collaborative Accounting Director to join its leadership team, reporting to the Senior Director, Accounting.
The Director will oversee accounting operations, including the financial close, billing and revenue accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll accounting, financial reporting, and audit activities, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and federal award requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Lead full-cycle accounting operations, including the general ledger, monthly and year-end close, reconciliations, accruals and allocations.
- Review significant and nonroutine transactions, estimates, and account analyses for GAAP compliance and audit readiness.
- Direct billing and revenue accounting for government contracts, grants, foundations and other funders.
- Review revenue recognition analyses under ASC 606 and ASC 958.
- Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll accounting and information reporting, maintaining internal controls.
- Serve as first reviewer of financial statements, disclosures and Form 990 workpapers.
- Lead accounting support for the annual audit, Single Audit and funder audits, including the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA).
- Support federal award compliance, including Uniform Guidance, indirect cost recovery and NICRA matters.
- Lead, coach and develop accounting staff, and partner with Finance, Grants & Contracts, HR, Technology & Data Science and program teams.
- Identify and implement process improvements across accounting, billing, ERP, payroll and reporting, including use of approved automation tools.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field; CPA or other professional certification preferred.
- At least 12 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years of accounting leadership.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial close, general ledger accounting, financial reporting and internal controls.
- Significant experience supporting annual audits; Single Audit experience required.
- Strong knowledge of ASC 606 and ASC 958.
- Significant nonprofit accounting experience and knowledge of federal award requirements, Uniform Guidance, SEFA and NICRAs.
- Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
Target salary range: $116,302 - $207,050 (mid $161,600). Full-time; the position has the opportunity to be fully remote. Benefits include generous paid time off, medical, dental and vision insurance, and an immediate 403(b) retirement plan.
