The Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of Singapore invites applications from ambitious scholars to conduct cutting-edge humanities or social sciences research on Asia, within the Food Politics and Society cluster. The cluster is an interdisciplinary forum exploring the impact of food and food systems at individual, household, community, society, national and international levels. It welcomes diverse methods, from ethnographic and archival work to visual, textual and quantitative approaches, and focuses on Asia. Its three research strands are: (i) Power, Politics, and Policy; (ii) Production, Consumption, and Technology; (iii) Historical Legacies and Meaning.
Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Cluster Leader, researchers will take the lead in organising workshops and conferences, participate in cluster projects, develop new initiatives (including applying for grant funding), and carry out their own writing for publication. Administrative duties and committee work form part of the position.
Requirements: A PhD from a reputable university, a well-established publication record and scholarly international visibility in their field. Candidates still completing their PhD may apply if graduation is confirmed by the start date. Candidates with more than 2 years of post-PhD research experience may be considered for the Research Fellowship position. Applicants need clear plans for high-quality research and publication at ARI beyond their doctoral work.
Terms: Two-year appointment, commencing Jun/Jul 2027 or Dec 2027/Jan 2028. Postdoctoral Fellowship remuneration is S$6,000 per month and Research Fellowship from S$6,250 per month, all-in and inclusive of housing and living stipends. University housing is not provided. Travel assistance, and support for fieldwork and conference attendance, are available. Singapore Citizens and PRs are eligible for provident fund benefits. Any offer is conditional on NUS approval and a valid work pass.
