AGRA is an African-led institution that supports inclusive agricultural transformation and sustainable food systems, empowering smallholder farming households to move from subsistence to profitable agribusiness. Its work spans policy and state capability, seed systems, sustainable farming, and inclusive markets and trade.
The In-Country Grants Officer – Malawi, as part of the grants management team, supports the Country Director and grants and programs staff, processes grants, and maintains a grants database. The role oversees grants monitoring and evaluation processes in Malawi and manages the flow of grants in line with donor rules and AGRA's internal policies.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day project and grants management of grantees within the assigned portfolio
- Create and maintain a grant tracking database through the AGRA Management Information System (AMIS) and monitor the flow of proposals from receipt of documentation to award and first payment
- Identify grantees needing technical assistance and train them on AGRA grants compliance and reporting requirements
- Conduct pre-award due diligence, including organisational capacity assessments
- Ensure grantee adherence to donor compliance requirements throughout the grant life
- Advise country leadership on grants compliance and provide portfolio performance reports (budget uptake, disbursement, burn-rate, closures, audit recommendations)
- Collaborate with country leadership and HQ regional grants officers on grants administration systems, policies and procedures
- Serve as secretary to the Grants Charter Committee and compile grant materials for review
- Track the grant-making pipeline, Request for Concept Note processing and Grant Award Letter issuance
- Build grantee capacity on M&E systems and tools; run start-up orientation workshops for new awards
- Ensure complete expenditure documentation is uploaded to AMIS in compliance with Mastercard Foundation and other donors
Qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a commercial domain or equivalent experience in a related field
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and internet search; quick to learn new applications
- Working knowledge of key donors including MCF, USAID, Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
- Knowledge of AMIS desirable
- Relevant experience in a grant-making environment
- Excellent organisational, interpersonal and multitasking skills, with strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
