WoMin, launched in October 2013, is an African ecofeminist alliance which works alongside
organisations of women, peasants and mining-impacted communities, and in partnership with other
sympathetic organisations, to make visible and publicise the impacts of extractives on peasant and
working-class women; to support women’s organising, movement-building and solidarity; and to
advance, in alliance with numerous others, an African post-extractivist, ecologically just, womencentred
alternative to the dominant destructive model of development.
Based remotely anywhere in Francophone West Africa, WoMin seeks to appoint a
Women Building Power for Climate Justice Lead
To lead WoMin’s WCJ team and its contributions to building and strengthening an African women’s movement for climate justice, which holds a progressive Pan African ecofeminist politics at its core; and to the building of key women-led and ecofeminist organizing efforts, convergences and campaigns addressing 'false green energy solutions' primarily, specifically gas and oil in West Africa, with some support to climate reparations, and the wider energy alternatives held in the commons.
Key responsibilities of the Women Building Power for Climate Justice Lead will include:
Provide strategic leadership to WoMin’s WCJ programme
- Provide overall strategic leadership and direction to WoMin’s Women’s Climate Justice programme, grounded in ecofeminist and Pan-African analysis.
- Lead and support women’s organising, movement building, research, advocacy and campaigning, ensuring women’s power remains central to the programme.
- Manage, mentor and provide strategic guidance to the WCJ team, while ensuring alignment and coordination with WoMin’s other programmes and units.
- Oversee research, popular education, advocacy and alliance-building around climate justice, false green solutions, climate reparations and the feminist energy commons.
Lead WoMin’s Oil and Gas organising and campaigning efforts
- Work with partners, allies and the Women’s Climate Assembly (WCA) to strengthen women-led organising and campaigning around oil and gas extraction and false green energy solutions.
- Support the development of broad-based women’s assemblies and national/sub-national platforms in priority West African countries.
- Coordinate with WoMin’s Movement Support Unit and other teams to strengthen movement building, campaigning and advocacy from below across West Africa.
- Connect this work to WoMin’s wider Pan-African false green energy solutions agenda, including relevant work in Central Africa and the Congo Basin.
Lead WoMin’s contribution to an African women’s movement for climate justice
- Provide organisation-wide leadership to ensure WoMin’s climate justice work is politically clear, coherent and aligned across programmes and geographies.
- Strengthen Pan-African women-led climate justice organising, including Women’s Climate Assemblies and national climate justice platforms.
- Build knowledge, political analysis and movement capacity through participatory research, popular education, training, exchanges and learning initiatives.
- Lead and coordinate WoMin’s engagement with African climate justice networks and institutions, including the ACJC, AU, ACHPR and other relevant platforms.
General responsibilities
- Support fundraising and donor engagement for the WCJ programme, including funder relationships and proposal development.
- Develop and manage WCJ strategies, operational plans, budgets, organisational reporting and funder reporting.
- Represent WoMin at regional and global platforms and contribute to wider organisational strategy, planning and performance management.
- Lead and contribute to communications and media work, including writing, media engagement, podcasts and other activities that profile WoMin’s perspectives and the struggles of affected women.
The Women Building Power for Climate Justice Lead must meet the following criteria:
Education
- Relevant postgraduate qualification in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Human Rights, Gender Studies, Environmental Studies or a related field, although relevant work experience is equally valued.
Experience
- 8–10 years’ relevant experience, preferably in the non-profit sector, including at least 5 years in programme/project development, management and coordination.
- Proven experience supporting people’s organising and women’s movement building, with a strong feminist/women’s rights orientation.
- Demonstrated experience in campaigning, advocacy, network and alliance building, ideally at sub-regional or Pan-African level.
- Strong political and analytical understanding of power, inequality and intersecting forms of exclusion, with experience in report/proposal writing; participatory research, facilitation and popular education are highly desirable.
