ICCT is an award-winning, independent global non-profit research organization dedicated to supporting effective design and implementation of policies addressing the impacts of the global transportation sector on climate change and public health. ICCT has an immediate opening for a highly motivated Associate Researcher or Researcher in the Fuels program, working on low-GHG energy alternatives for the marine, aviation, and road transport sectors. The role involves conducting robust research and analyses, developing policy recommendations, and communicating actionable findings to policymakers, industry, and other stakeholders, with a focus on EU policies including the Renewable Energy Directive, FuelEU Maritime, and ReFuelEU (aviation). Responsibilities include analyzing the cost, life-cycle GHG emissions, and availability of low-GHG renewable fuels such as renewable hydrogen derivatives and biofuels; writing technical reports, policy briefs, and articles for technical and non-technical audiences; presenting findings in public and private forums; and collaborating with ICCT's global Fuels team, EU colleagues, external partners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. Requirements: Associate Researcher needs a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, environmental policy or related field plus at least two years of related experience, or a PhD; Researcher needs a master's or PhD in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, energy and resources, or a related subject plus at least three years of related experience. Excellent research and quantitative skills with strong written and verbal communication skills required; proficiency in Excel with Python or R skills desired; ability to work independently, be highly organized, self-directed, creative, and strategic in problem-solving; availability for occasional EU work travel; fluency in English required, other European languages desired; experience with life-cycle assessment and/or techno-economic analyses desired. The role is based in ICCT's Berlin office, with the possibility to work from elsewhere in Germany, France, Ireland, or Sweden after an initial 6-month orientation, requiring regular visits to Berlin. Annual starting salary is EUR 70,000 (Associate Researcher) or EUR 84,000 (Researcher), with an initial 2-year contract with possibility of extension.
