Founded in 1964 by Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam and located in Trieste, ICTP provides scientists from developing countries with continuing education and skills for long and productive careers. Under the supervision of the Head of the Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Section, the incumbent will initiate, develop and coordinate front-line research, guide and mentor post-doctoral fellows, visitors and students, teach courses, and participate in organising section activities and selecting applicants to ICTP programmes. Responsibilities include undertaking front-line research, hiring and mentoring post-doctoral fellows, reporting research results at international meetings, teaching in the Diploma programme and supervising theses, mentoring M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, establishing cooperation with scientists from developing countries, organising ICTP meetings and external activities predominantly in developing countries, and managing individual research grants. Requires an advanced university degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Physics or a related discipline, at least 4 years of relevant professional experience in condensed matter and/or statistical physics, internationally recognized research achievements, and teaching/mentoring experience. Excellent English required; knowledge of another UNESCO language desirable. Approximate annual starting salary is 90,666 EUR.
