Kairos is a nonprofit accelerating talent into AI safety and policy, having trained over 1,200 people through flagship programs such as SPAR, Generator Residency, Global Challenges Project, and Pathfinder Fellowship. The organisation is starting a Special Projects team with a broad mandate to pursue high-impact, time-bound opportunities for the AI safety ecosystem that don't have a clean home elsewhere, including one-off events, pilot programs, and initiatives that may grow into lasting Kairos programs. The Head of Special Projects will own a small portfolio of one to three early-stage bets at a time, taking each from concept to operation; evaluate and decide which opportunities across the team and ecosystem are worth pursuing; scale successful pilots into reliable systems or hand them to long-term owners, and wind down projects that don't work; grow and manage a small team as projects mature; and contribute to org-wide strategy. Candidates should have experience starting programs, organisations, products, or communities from an idea to reality, be able to execute quickly with incomplete information, bring informed views on gaps in the AI safety ecosystem, and be comfortable with an evolving mandate. This is a remote role with access to offices in San Francisco, Berkeley, London, or Boston, expected travel three to six times a year, and a preference for candidates able to attend meetings in the ET time zone.
