The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is a global sexual and reproductive health (SRH) service provider and a leading advocate for universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). IPPF Africa Region (IPPFAR), headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, works to increase access to SRHR services for the most vulnerable youth, men and women in sub-Saharan Africa through a network of Member Associations, strategic partners and volunteers in 42 countries.
Project Overview: IPPFAR, in collaboration with AFJCI and CRR, leads the delivery of a new project called Justice for Survivors (J4S), funded by the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD). J4S aims to strengthen the capacity of feminist movements to address gender-based violence (GBV) through sub-grants to feminist organizations, with a focus on small, often unregistered groups. The project is implemented across four countries: Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Tanzania and Kenya, and includes mentorship, tailored training, sub-granting and a research-action component.
Role Purpose: The Communication Coordination Consultant will coordinate, advise and support the communication activities of the three partner organizations, ensuring alignment with the project communication strategy, branding guidelines and donor visibility requirements. The consultant will not replace partners' communication teams but will provide strategic guidance, coordination, quality control and content support.
Key Responsibilities: Support development and updating of a joint project communication plan; ensure coherence across partners and serve as the communication coordination focal point; establish editorial calendars, shared tools and templates; ensure branding and donor visibility guidelines are applied consistently; review and provide feedback on partner communication products (press releases, stories, reports, visuals); support storytelling on sensitive topics such as gender, human rights, youth, SRHR and GBV using ethical, rights-based communication; advise on website, social media and newsletter content; coordinate joint communication moments and campaigns; provide light coaching to partners' communication focal points; encourage archiving of communication materials; and provide periodic updates to the project coordination team and liaise on donor communication requirements.
Deliverables (indicative): updates to the project communication plan, shared editorial calendar and coordination tools, harmonized communication products, periodic communication briefs, and an end-of-project communication summary with lessons learned.
Time Allocation: 2 days per week on average over the 3-year project duration, with level of effort varying by project phase.
Required Qualifications and Experience: University degree in communications, journalism, media studies, international development or a related field; at least 5 years of experience in communication roles, preferably in international development, civil society or multi-partner projects; proven experience in communication coordination and working with consortia; strong writing and editing skills in French or English (working knowledge of both a strong asset); demonstrated understanding of human rights, gender equality, youth and/or SRHR issues; and experience advising on branding, donor visibility and strategic storytelling. Core competencies include strategic communication thinking, coordination and facilitation, excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication, ability to work independently, attention to detail, and a collaborative, solution-oriented mindset.
