SOS MEDITERRANEE is a civil European maritime and humanitarian rescue association founded in 2015 to address the humanitarian tragedy on the Central Mediterranean migratory route. It is looking to strengthen its pool of intercultural facilitators to join the Post Rescue team onboard the Ocean Viking, with an immediate need for the next rotation estimated between 26 August and 25 October 2026.
Reporting to the Post-Rescue Team Leader, the Intercultural Facilitator in Arabic, Bengali or Tigrinya enables communication with rescued persons and other actors, collects key information, and identifies those needing further support and referral. Responsibilities span strategy, protection activities (registration, referral of medical and protection needs, providing accessible information on rights and processes), care activities (supporting distributions, MHPSS activities, recreational activities, de-escalating tensions), and communication (translation with actors such as the Libyan coastguard under SARCo supervision, managing feedback loops, handling complaints per PSEA and child safeguarding policies, collecting testimonies).
This is a ship-based position requiring physical fitness and 'seaworthiness', a passport valid at least 6 months, and the ability to cope with stress and shared living space. Profile sought: training in facilitation/cultural mediation and/or interpretation (essential), Psychological First Aid training (essential), 2 years of similar experience, experience with people on the move and in complex/distress environments, crowd management and conflict resolution in humanitarian settings, maritime SAR desirable. Fluency in spoken and written English plus one or more of Arabic, Tigrinya, Bengali. Contract: short-term 6-8 week rotation onboard, Europe-wide travel, salary from €2,860 gross according to time spent on the Ocean Viking, with insurance on and off board. This is a roster position.
