The Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) is a non-partisan, non-profit dedicated to equipping the next generation of Americans with the skills to communicate and collaborate across lines of difference. CDI works with U.S. colleges and universities by providing co-curricular programming for students, professional development for faculty and staff, and strategic guidance to leadership, with the goal of fostering constructive dialogue and creating conditions for lasting organizational change. CDI was co-founded by psychologist Jonathan Haidt.
CDI is seeking a strategic, media-savvy communicator to serve as Vice President of Strategic Communications. Reporting to the Chief Growth Officer, the VP will be responsible for establishing CDI as the leading national voice on constructive dialogue in higher education and converting that visibility into audience growth and organizational credibility. This is a hands-on builder role leading CDI's communications strategy, earned media, executive profile-building, messaging and narrative, editorial leadership of thought leadership and newsletter, organic social, and crisis and reputation management. Initially an individual contributor supported by fractional and contractor resources, the VP will over time manage a Communications & Content Manager.
Responsibilities include setting the annual communications and thought leadership strategy, serving as a trusted communications advisor to leadership, owning CDI's messaging guide and narrative framework, leading the executive visibility program (op-eds, podcasts, keynotes, media placements), driving proactive media outreach, leading rapid response and crisis communications, providing editorial leadership for the higher education newsletter and blog, and building the communications team and operating model.
Requirements: 10–12 years of experience in strategic communications or PR; established media relationships across national, higher education, and mission-aligned press; exceptional judgment and nonpartisan restraint; strong writing and editing skills; a hands-on operator and builder mindset; cross-functional collaboration ability; and deep mission alignment. Compensation is $175,000–$195,000 based on experience.
