The Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) is a non-partisan, non-profit dedicated to equipping the next generation of Americans with the skills to communicate and collaborate across lines of difference. CDI works with U.S. colleges and universities by providing co-curricular programming for students, professional development for faculty and staff, and strategic guidance to leadership. CDI was co-founded by psychologist Jonathan Haidt. CDI is growing quickly, having doubled to 30 employees in 2025 and expecting to reach 50 within the next year.
CDI is looking for a Director of People Operations with strong HR generalist foundations and experience supporting organizations through rapid growth. This person will strengthen and scale CDI's people systems while maintaining the collaborative, mission-driven culture. The role includes managing a People Operations Generalist and reports to the VP of Operations, with a primary focus on employee experience, organizational culture, manager effectiveness, and the systems that help a growing organization function.
Responsibilities span Culture & Engagement (leading initiatives around onboarding, trainings, team gatherings, all-hands meetings and internal communications); Manager Support & Employee Development (coaching managers on feedback, communication, and difficult conversations; building performance and development practices); HR Operations & Compliance (owning the compensation framework, overseeing core HR operations across a multi-state workforce via PEO JustWorks, ensuring compliance with employment laws, maintaining HR policies and the employee handbook, and managing HR vendors); and Talent & Growth Strategy (managing the People Operations Generalist and evolving hiring practices and talent systems).
Requirements: 7+ years of progressive HR or People Operations experience, including at least 3 years in a senior generalist or leadership role; experience supporting organizations through significant growth; strong generalist experience across employee relations, performance management, compensation, benefits, compliance, and talent acquisition; and experience directly managing employees or small teams. Compensation is $120,000-$140,000 annually with remote-first work (must be based in the U.S.), unlimited PTO, 13 company holidays, health/vision/dental plans, 3% 401k match, and a $1,000 annual professional development budget.
