Freedom from Torture is dedicated to healing and protecting people who have survived torture, providing therapies, medical documentation of torture, and legal and welfare help. It is seeking a clinical/counselling psychologist for a role combining research with clinical work.
Contract: Fixed-term for 1 year (possible extension of up to a further 12 months). Part time, 28 hours per week. Salary: £44,270 - £51,353 per annum (£55,338 - £64,192 FTE). Location: London.
Research responsibilities: Play a central role in delivering an innovative mental health research programme, funded by a major UK research funder, exploring whether artificial intelligence can be used as a safe, ethical and feasible therapist assistant for survivors of torture in managing distressing memories. Survivor co-design is central, so you will work closely with survivor advisors, co-design groups and governance structures. You will be the central contact and coordination point for the research within clinical services: keeping survivors and clinical teams updated, actively recruiting survivors, clinicians and interpreters, ensuring informed consent, facilitating data collection, and ensuring ethical and methodological processes are followed, including data screening and cleaning to remove sensitive information.
Clinical responsibilities: Provide individual, couple and/or group therapy to survivors of torture and organised violence and manage an appropriate caseload, with regular reviews, risk assessments and outcome measures. Assess service users' needs and create jointly agreed treatment plans. Act as a role model and leader, manage risk and safeguarding concerns, and provide line management and supervision for clinical staff, volunteers and trainees where appropriate.
About you: Qualified in a relevant discipline with accreditation and membership of a professional body; knowledge of torture and the impact of exile; knowledge of relevant mental health legislation; understanding of at least one evidence-based approach to trauma therapy and able to provide relevant assessments; and a passion for research with a commitment to rigorous methodology and ethical processes.
Benefits: 30 days annual leave and 6% employer pension contribution. The post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
Closing date: 16th November 2026
HOW TO APPLY:
