Last Mile Health saves lives in the world's most remote communities by partnering with governments to recruit, train, equip, and integrate professional community health workers into national health systems. In Ethiopia, the team works with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the Health Extension Program (HEP), including HEP Assist, an AI-powered clinical decision-support tool that helps Health Extension Workers (HEWs) provide evidence-based care at the point of service.
The Clinician (AI Validation & Training Specialist) is the clinical anchor for the HEP Assist AI project. With a focus on Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH), the Clinician acts as the "human-in-the-loop": training the AI, monitoring its outputs, and serving as the ultimate safety layer. Across project phases, the Clinician reviews and approves AI-generated responses, conducts live monitoring and intervention, and oversees risk-based quality assurance. Two consultants will be engaged.
Consultancy details: 24-month project; up to 34 hours per week; based in Addis Ababa with in-person attendance Monday to Friday; monthly fee of 1,300 USD. Open to candidates located in and authorized to work in Ethiopia.
Scope of work:
- Conduct retrospective clinical review of AI responses for clinical decision-making.
- Design and train HEP Assist AI to provide follow-up questions and tailored responses.
- Review 100% of AI answers and follow-up questions for HEWs; approve, edit or reject based on clinical recommendation.
- Follow the HEP Assist AI dashboard.
- Provide feedback to supervisors.
Required qualifications:
- Degree in Medicine (MD).
- Demonstrated clinical experience with a strong focus on community health and primary healthcare.
- Deep knowledge of the Ethiopian Health Extension Program, community health protocols, and the clinical scope and limitations of HEWs.
- Proven ability to rapidly review clinical data, make safe triage decisions, and monitor live audio/text streams for clinical errors.
- Experience mapping clinical guidelines into decision trees, workflows, or training manuals.
- Strong technological fluency with dashboards, digital health tools, and software interfaces.
- Native or full professional fluency in Amharic or Afaan Oromo, with the ability to accurately transcribe and translate complex clinical terminology.
Preferred qualifications:
- Specialty training (Specialist/Consultant) in Pediatrics or Gynecology and Obstetrics.
- Foundational understanding of AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), or clinical decision support systems.
