The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) stewards the movement of people putting effective altruism principles into practice to solve the world's most pressing problems, including global poverty, animal suffering and risks from transformative AI. CEA is hiring a Senior Media Specialist to run its day-to-day media operation. This is an individual contributor role on the Marketing and Communications Team, reporting to the Head of Media.
The role:
- Drive proactive coverage of effective altruism by turning the media strategy into a steady pipeline of pitches and placements.
- Build the media network by developing relationships with journalists, editors and producers covering EA and its key cause areas.
- Run the press desk as the first point of contact for media enquiries, escalating sensitive ones.
- Track EA coverage across news, podcasts and the EA Forum, and produce reporting and intelligence for CEA and the wider ecosystem.
- Manage journalist accreditation and media engagement at EA Global and EAGx events.
- Help protect EA's reputation and support crisis response alongside the Head of Media.
Key responsibilities include pitching stories and spokespeople, maintaining a media kit, identifying target journalists across philanthropy, AI safety, global health and animal welfare, preparing briefings, responding to press enquiries, monitoring daily media mentions, producing sentiment and coverage reports, and developing spokespeople.
What we're looking for:
- Experience in media relations, a press office or journalism, with a track record of landing positive, high-reach coverage.
- Ability to build high-trust relationships with journalists and colleagues.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to run media workstreams independently in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
- Sound judgment on when to handle something and when to escalate.
- Clear communication under pressure.
- Familiarity with effective altruism, or the ability to quickly develop a nuanced understanding.
- Bonus: existing relationships with journalists covering philanthropy, AI, global health or animal welfare, and experience with media monitoring tools and sentiment analysis.
