The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) stewards the movement of people putting effective altruism principles into practice to solve the world's most pressing problems, including global poverty, animal suffering, and risks from transformative AI. CEA is hiring a Head of Media to grow public awareness and understanding of effective altruism. This is a senior management role on the Marketing and Communications Team, reporting to the incoming Director of Communications (the Head of Marketing and Communications in the interim).

Key responsibilities:
- Set media strategy: create, deliver and report against an annual media strategy that supports CEA's brand goals.
- Shape public discourse around effective altruism, and pursue opportunities for positive coverage, including at EA Global conferences.
- Handle press inquiries: manage high-stakes media requests and act as a spokesperson for CEA.
- Build and leverage media networks: develop relationships with journalists, engage agencies and consultants, and develop new spokespeople within the EA community.
- Advise key stakeholders, including CEA staff, partner organizations and community leaders, with media advice and training.
- Manage reputational risk: monitor threats and lead the response to crisis situations.
- Build the media function: hire and manage new staff, contractors and agencies.

This is a demanding role. It involves sensitive inquiries from national and international outlets, often on tight deadlines, with occasional evening and weekend work.

What we're looking for:
- Experience leading proactive and reactive media strategies for high-profile organizations or brands.
- Strong relationships with journalists and a record of landing placements.
- Experience handling high-stakes media situations and crisis communications.
- Experience building and leading remote teams and external partners.
- Ability to work under pressure in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
- Familiarity with effective altruism principles, or the ability to develop a nuanced understanding of them quickly.
- Bonus: knowledge of the US political landscape.

Other information: This is a full-time, remote position based in the US. Candidates in or near a major media hub such as New York, Washington DC, or San Francisco are preferred. Candidates must already have the right to work in the US, as visa sponsorship is not available. The role involves about four trips a year for team retreats and events, including several international trips. Salary is $140,000 - $170,000 USD plus a 10% unconditional 401k contribution. Benefits include private health insurance, flexible work hours, a $6,000 annual professional development allowance, a $6,000 mental health support allowance, extended parental leave and 25 days of paid vacation.
