The Global Survivors Fund (GSF), founded in 2019 by Dr Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, works to enhance access to reparations for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence worldwide. In Syria, GSF works with the National Commission for Transitional Justice, survivor groups and civil society to support reparations policies and programmes, including survivor co-creation, technical exchanges and support to Collective Recovery and Reparation Centres.
The Area Coordinator (consultancy, 12 months with possible extension, up to 120 working days) coordinates GSF's activities in Damascus and Rif Damascus and its support to the Collective Recovery and Reparation Centre in Rif Damascus, working with Commission focal points, centre teams, survivor groups and local partners. Reports to the GSF Country Representative for Syria.
Responsibilities:
- Area planning and programme coordination: develop and follow up workplans, track implementation progress and access constraints, coordinate with Logistics and Administration.
- Commission cooperation and technical support: coordinate regularly with Commission counterparts, support technical meetings, expert visits and learning exchanges, and bring survivor perspectives into discussions on reparations.
- Centre development and programme quality: support delivery of centre activities, coordinate information, dialogue and recovery activities, and identify gaps in participation and accessibility.
- Survivor participation and local partnerships: build relationships with survivor groups and civil society, coordinate referrals to health, MHPSS and livelihood support, and promote informed consent, confidentiality and safeguarding.
- Monitoring, reporting and shared learning: work with the MEL Coordinator on activity records and survivor feedback, prepare updates and contribute to programme reporting and learning.
Requirements:
- University degree in social sciences, law, social work, international development or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- At least three years of relevant experience in programme coordination, community engagement, human rights or recovery programmes, preferably with conflict-affected survivors or groups.
- Experience with civil society, community groups or public institutions, and good knowledge of the context and stakeholders in Damascus and Rif Damascus.
- Understanding of survivor-centred approaches, safeguarding and confidentiality; familiarity with reparations or transitional justice is an asset.
- Strong coordination and facilitation skills; ability to prepare workplans, analyse feedback and write clear reports.
- Fluency in written and spoken Arabic; English desirable.
- Ability to work independently, with regular field and centre presence and travel as required.
