The Sports Health Officer will coach and mentor a network of existing and new basketball and other sports teams under the Amref CFF Centre Court Basketball Programme, which aims to empower adolescents through inclusive, school-based basketball to strengthen wellbeing and social cohesion in conflict-affected communities. The officer will train adolescent youths in basketball, champion school-based delivery of life skills and health education, and create inclusive spaces for self-expression, talent development and peer support.
Key responsibilities:
- Program implementation and monitoring: deliver mentorship and psychosocial support training (MHPSS, child and adolescent development, risk and protective factors, Psychological First Aid, referral pathways); champion adolescent SRHR guidance (menstrual health and hygiene, STIs and HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention of unintended pregnancies, GBV prevention); run peer-to-peer mentoring for underprivileged children, including undocumented minors and returnees from the Sudan war, through twice-weekly Court Side Mentoring sessions in Tonj and surrounding areas; form 2 social clubs with monthly drama, arts and crafts, and debates in schools; organize monthly radio talks on health, peace and leadership.
- Sport tournaments: organize weekly school basketball training and monthly inter-school friendly matches as a platform for health talks and SRHR messaging, with trophies, prize money and scholarships for top performers; conduct quarterly review meetings with students, players, mentors, local authorities and elders.
- Program coordination: participate in health, nutrition and sports activities, coordinate across project components and schools in Tonj, integrate health, nutrition and sports at community level, advise the Program Manager on sports equipment, and represent Amref in coordination meetings in Tonj or Warrap State.
- Reporting: report periodically to the Programme Manager on performance, challenges and lessons learnt; provide monthly data on sports activities and team performance; document human interest stories showing the impact of sports coaching and mentorship.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, Sports Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Science or Public Health, OR a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Food Science or Sports Science.
- Proof of membership in a sports team at state or national level (basketball strongly preferred), with at least 1-2 years of playing or coaching a sports team (preferably basketball or football) in South Sudan.
- Knowledge of or experience advocating adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights is an advantage.
