Hivos is seeking a dynamic and proactive Communications Assistant to join its global Communications team for a temporary maternity cover, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The role ensures continuity of corporate communications in the region while providing dedicated support to two programs: EU SWITCH Kenya Green - Tujenge Pamoja (supporting Kenya's transition to an inclusive, circular green economy through MSMEs led by women, youth and marginalized groups) and Rural Women Cultivating Change (strengthening the rights, leadership and economic resilience of rural women through agroecology and sustainable food systems). Time is split between Corporate Communications Support (30%) and Program Communications Support (70%).
Key responsibilities:
- Program communications: identify, document and draft impact and change stories; create communication assets for digital, print and multimedia platforms; coordinate program events, field visits and campaigns; ensure donor and partner visibility.
- Corporate communications: help implement Hivos' global communications strategy in the East African context; keep materials consistent with brand guidelines; coordinate communications around regional events and international days.
- Online communications: maintain Hivos East Africa's social media presence; produce, edit and publish multimedia content; translate technical program information into accessible content.
- External positioning and media: monitor media mentions; prepare press releases, media briefs and media kits; maintain a database of journalists and media organizations; assemble program briefs, fact sheets and slides.
- Internal coordination: keep editorial calendars updated; organize communication files and digital assets; document workflows for a smooth handover.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field.
- 1-2 years of experience in communications, digital media or PR (internships or volunteer experience in an international NGO or development context count).
- Strong writing, editing and formatting skills.
- Practical experience managing professional social media profiles and content management tools.
- Basic graphic design or photo/video editing skills (Canva or Photoshop) highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Professional fluency in English; Swahili highly desirable.
- Alignment with Hivos' values on gender equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights.
Full-time (40 hours per week), fixed-term 3-month contract on a local contract based on Hivos local labour conditions. The successful candidate must have or secure the legal right to work in Kenya before appointment.
