ACLED, an independent conflict and protest monitoring organization, is seeking a Lusophone Africa Researcher to assist in the collection, review and management of political violence and protest data across Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Sao Tome and Principe. This is an entry-level, independent consultant opportunity requiring a minimum of 10 to 15 hours per week, fully remote from any location with reliable internet. The initial consultancy period runs from 9 November 2026 to 30 June 2027, with possible continuation subject to performance and funding. Duties include reviewing news, international organization, NGO and security reports to code incidents of political violence and protest into an Excel template, and ensuring the quality, consistency and reliability of the data produced. Candidates selected will undergo extensive ACLED training and be evaluated before retention as Researchers. Remuneration is 20 USD per hour. Required skills: a university degree in international relations, political science, conflict studies, peacebuilding, international development, or a related field; fluency in English and Portuguese; familiarity with Excel; desk-based research experience; ability to work to deadlines with limited supervision; attention to detail; and access to a computer, reliable internet, email and Microsoft Office. Research focus or professional experience in conflict/peacebuilding in the region is an advantage. Shortlisted candidates complete a two-hour coding aptitude exercise.
