BirdLife International, the only global Partnership conserving birds and all life on our planet, is seeking a Senior Environment and Social Safeguards Officer for its Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya. The role leads the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of environmental and social safeguards for the GFIP Regional Coordination Project (RCP), in compliance with GEF and CI-GEF Environmental and Social Management Framework and Safeguard policies. It integrates robust safeguards, gender equality and social inclusion principles into all operations, working closely with Conservation International, the RCP Project Management Unit, National Child Projects and regional stakeholders.
Key responsibilities:
- Environmental and social safeguards compliance: operationalize the ESMF, including safeguard screenings, risk categorization and mitigation monitoring; develop and update ESMPs, Stakeholder Engagement Plans, Gender Mainstreaming Plans and GBV action plans; maintain the safeguard risk register; oversee the Accountability and Grievance Mechanism; coordinate responses to CI-GEF supervision and compliance reviews.
- Gender mainstreaming and social inclusion: coordinate implementation of the Gender Mainstreaming Plan, lead gender and social inclusion training, serve as Secretariat to the GFIP Gender and Safeguards Coordination Group, mentor national Gender and Safeguard Focal Points, and ensure Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles are applied.
- Technical assistance and capacity building: deliver training on safeguard standards, act as technical backstop for national safeguards and gender officers, convene cross-country learning sessions, and design training curricula and e-learning modules.
- Stakeholder engagement and grievance management: facilitate inclusive consultations with vulnerable and marginalized groups, ensure participation of women, youth and indigenous peoples, and track resolution of grievances.
- Monitoring, evaluation and reporting: prepare quarterly and annual safeguards monitoring reports, maintain documentation, support audits and evaluations, and verify safeguard-related data for donor reporting.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Sociology, Anthropology or a related field.
- Minimum three years of professional experience in environmental and social safeguards management for donor-funded projects (GEF, GCF, World Bank or similar).
- Demonstrated experience in gender mainstreaming; familiarity with CI-GEF/GEF safeguard standards or IFC Performance Standards.
- Proven capacity to conduct training, facilitate stakeholder engagement and manage grievance systems.
- Complete fluency in English and French; Portuguese is an advantage.
- Willingness to travel (about 10% of time).
Contract: 1-year fixed-term, full-time (40 hours per week). Salary: gross monthly KES 300,000, plus benefits including 12% employer pension contribution, medical insurance, 22 days annual leave, group life assurance and access to LinkedIn Learning.
