Amref Health Africa - Tanzania is a locally registered non-governmental organization, established as a fully-fledged country office since 1987 and part of Amref Health Africa, an Africa-wide organization in existence since 1957. Amref is driven by its vision of 'Lasting health change in Africa' and its mission 'To catalyze and drive community-led and people-centred health systems while addressing social determinants of health'. Under Cooperative Agreement No. 1 NU2HGH000053-01-00, Amref implements the Advancing Efforts and Strategies to Protect and Improve Public Health Component 1 - Global Health Security Priorities (GHSA) project in Tanzania, supporting the government to strengthen the Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) System at sub-national levels, particularly in high-risk border regions, and to comply with IHR (2005) through GHSA targets. The project also covers a WASH component and works in collaboration with the Tanzania Ministry of Health, Zanzibar Ministry of Health, and PORALG.
Duties and responsibilities: Coordinate implementation of EBS activities in collaboration with MoH, PORALG and partners; provide technical assistance in the review/development of National IDSR and EBS guidelines, SOPs and training materials; participate in the National Surveillance Technical Working Group; work with national and subnational surveillance stakeholders on EBS implementation and on linkages between Indicator and Event Based Surveillance; maintain regular contact with MOHCDGEC departments, regional/district health management teams and project partners; liaise with internal and external contacts in coordination with the Project Manager; perform epidemiological data analysis and interpretation and communicate results to surveillance officers at regional, district and facility level; strengthen the capacity of regional and district surveillance officers in data analysis, interpretation and use; participate in monthly, quarterly and annual project planning; prepare quality activity and donor reports; maintain project databases and filing systems; and contribute to proposal development for resource mobilization.
Qualifications: Advanced university degree in Epidemiology, preferably Field Epidemiology; knowledge of the development of scientific papers and epidemiological surveys; minimum of 3 years in a busy epidemiological setting handling disease outbreaks and other Public Health Events of International Concern; strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Internet) and presentation skills; sufficient knowledge and skills in Event Based Surveillance and deep knowledge of public health and related subjects; and experience training, supervising and mentoring others, including non-health personnel. Full-time position based in Dar es Salaam.
