REBUILD.US is a national organization of disaster survivors and community leaders from the most climate-impacted regions of the country, working to build a new response to climate shocks that both cares for people and wins lasting solutions. The organization works through three interventions: organizing money (a fundraising and grantmaking platform that moves funds within 48 hours of a disaster to local leaders; over $16 million distributed to 125 groups), organizing people (the first national disaster survivors association), and organizing attention (a creative command center advancing a new model for strategic communications). REBUILD.US is fiscally sponsored by Assets Under Movement (AUM+), a national philanthropic platform rooted in the labor movement.
The Communications Director is a member of REBUILD.US's senior leadership team, responsible for executing the organization's communications, narrative, and brand-building strategy. The role leads a comprehensive communications program during both climate disaster rapid-response and "blue sky" periods, powering organizing, fundraising, and advocacy campaigns.
Core responsibilities: develop and execute communications strategy aligned with organizational priorities and theory of change; manage the communications function including staff, strategy partners, and vendors, setting day-to-day priorities and clear systems and workflows; craft and implement a dynamic social media and digital communications strategy, overseeing content creation, design, scheduling, distribution, and analytics; serve as the connective link between REBUILD.US and NewWorld, the partner running the creative command center, ensuring a consistent voice across earned, owned, social, and paid channels; oversee the full content lifecycle from ideation to creation, editing, design, and distribution, producing high-quality collateral directly when necessary; and serve as an active member of the senior leadership team shaping strategic direction, organizational health, and culture.
Minimum requirements: 10+ years of experience in senior communications, editorial, or narrative strategy roles; a track record of building and leading high-performing, multi-disciplinary communications teams (digital, brand, media relations, content); 2+ years supervising direct reports; proven ability to translate organizational and narrative strategy into editorial output that shifts public attitudes, media coverage, or policy outcomes; exceptional writing and editing skills; comfort operating at both strategic and tactical levels; deep commitment to disaster-impacted communities and a survivor-centered, justice-oriented approach to recovery (direct experience with climate disaster response, organizing, or survivor communities a strong plus); exceptional relationship-building skills across staff, media, funders, movement partners, and survivors; and experience working with membership-based organizations such as labor unions or community organizations.
Salary: $145,000 - $164,000 commensurate with experience. Remote, U.S.-based role requiring approximately 25% travel. Benefits include 100% employer-paid health insurance (medical, dental, vision), 401k match, PTO and leave policies, professional development funds, and a remote work stipend.
