AIC CURE Children's Hospital Malawi has an opening for an Anesthesiologist. POSITION OVERVIEW: The Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing anesthesia for patients requiring surgical intervention in the hospital. In this capacity, the anesthesiologist will also oversee the nurse anesthetists or anesthetic officers. The role includes oversight of the HDU/ICU and any critically ill patient on the ward. The anesthesiologist will review all codes in the hospital and oversee the debrief. Subspecialty expertise in pediatric anesthesia is preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Complete and document preoperative anesthesia evaluations and order necessary lab work, consultations or other preoperative investigations at least the day prior to surgery; review preoperative patient charts for lab work, history and physical examination, vital signs, fluid status and medication sheets; choose the safest and most appropriate anaesthetic (general, regional, MAC, local or combination) and use the correct monitors for the duration of surgery; manage the patient airway using mask, bag-valve mask, intubation, LMA and other emergency airway procedures; accurately manage fluid resuscitation and measure blood loss; oversee the safe functioning of the anesthesia machine, oxygen supply, suction and related equipment in close consultation with the biomedical team; perform regional anesthesia techniques as required; assess and implement pain management in post-operative recovery; identify and treat intra- and post-operative anesthesia complications; chart patient physiological data, medications and fluids contemporaneously; comply with all network anaesthesia guidelines and SOPs; teach staff clinically and didactically on advanced life support, anesthesia and pain management; participate in resuscitation of patients; oversee accurate narcotic count and supply in the operating room and post-anesthesia care unit; supervise Anesthesia Technicians, nurses and officers and ensure restocking of anesthesia supplies; report to the Medical Director when it appears unsafe to use the operating rooms; act as an anesthesia consultant to anesthesia providers and medical/surgical staff; and complete the monthly CQI electronic report as directed by the Nursing/Anesthesia Clinical Director.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Medical degree from a qualified, recognized medical institution; specialist post-graduate certification in anesthesia, with preferred subspecialty interest in pediatric anesthesia; current licensure; current BLS and PALS certifications.
