The International Crisis Group's Great Lakes Project is looking for a volunteer intern to assist its Project Director and Analysts in their daily activities. This is a desk-based position that requires a natural flair for political conflict analysis, flexibility, intelligence and hard work, and offers an excellent opportunity to learn about conflict analysis and advocacy work and gain valuable experience in a high-profile international NGO. The volunteer intern will be based preferably in Nairobi, Kenya and will focus mainly on Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo but also work with analysts covering Burundi and Rwanda. Internships are available exclusively to students participating in academic or sponsored programs. Responsibilities include: monitoring political developments in the Great Lakes region via online sources; assisting with editing reports and briefings on conflict issues and other documents produced by Africa program staff; preparing advocacy and research materials and attending meetings with/on behalf of Crisis Group staff; carrying out weekly press reviews and composing monthly situation reports; and other administrative tasks including arranging meetings. Qualifications include: research and organisational skills; ability to summarise information; good command of verbal and written French and English (knowledge of local languages an added advantage); proven research skills in international relations or a similar subject, conflict analysis or human rights work; and proven interest in and knowledge of the Great Lakes region. Candidates must have authorization to work in Kenya, as Crisis Group cannot sponsor internship visas for this role.
