Protect Democracy is seeking an experienced, highly motivated attorney to join as Senior Counsel, focusing on the legal dimensions of artificial intelligence and advanced technology as they intersect with American democracy. This role is integral to scaling the AI for Democracy Action Lab—Protect Democracy's multidisciplinary, nonpartisan "action tank" focused on building tech tools and shaping law and policy to safeguard and strengthen democracy in the AI era. This is a remote position based in the United States, for candidates with at least 10 years of experience as an attorney, ideally including expertise in AI and emerging technology law. You will develop and advance legal strategies at the frontier of AI law and policy, driving creative impact litigation and projects that integrate legal, regulatory, and communications strategies. Responsibilities include: identifying, scoping, and managing complex integrated advocacy projects; leading development of innovative legal arguments and litigation approaches at the intersection of AI and democracy; researching, drafting, and editing pleadings, motions, briefs, and legal filings; communicating with opposing counsel and managing relationships with clients, coalition partners, experts, and government stakeholders; managing discovery processes; supervising and mentoring paralegals, junior legal staff, and law students; writing, publishing, and presenting on legal issues; briefing reporters and providing expert commentary; and engaging with policymakers, regulators, civil society partners, and the tech industry. Requirements: at least 10 years of legal experience (which can include judicial clerkships), bar membership in good standing in your jurisdiction of residence, experience developing and leading impact litigation or plaintiff-side civil litigation, entrepreneurial legal instincts, exceptional analytical/writing/presentation skills, and a nonpartisan, cross-ideological approach to protecting democracy. The starting salary range is $170,000 to $193,000, commensurate with experience.
