About The Role
The WaSH Officer is responsible for ensuring that the Safe Learning Project provide a safe, healthy , and child-friendly learning environment at school and communities. The officer works closely with Water supplies, education. health and community stakeholders to improve access to water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices in target schools and surrounding communities. S(H)e Lead the implementation of WASH activities in accordance with project plans, donor requirements, and national standards.
Primary Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
1. Technical Planning and Implementation
* Lead the implementation of WASH activities in accordance with project plans, donor requirements, and national standards.
* Coordinate the design, Bid document preparations, construction/ rehabilitation, and maintenance of WaSH infrastructures in schools and surrounding communities.
* Ensure all facilities are gender-sensitive, disability-inclusive, and child-friendly.
* Promote climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable WASH solutions.
2. Hygiene Promotion and Behavior Change
* Develop and facilitate hygiene promotion and behavior change campaigns for students, teachers, parents, and communities.
* Organize awareness sessions on handwashing, sanitation, menstrual hygiene, water safety, and disease prevention.
3. Coordination and Partnership
* Collaborate with education and protection officers to ensure integrated programming.
* Coordinate with concerned government offices, school administrations, and community structures.
* Participate in relevant WASH coordination forums/platforms/clusters.
* Build the capacity of teachers, school management committees, Parent-Teacher Associations, and community groups on WASH management.
4. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, Learning and Reporting
* Monitor project progress against project indicators and work plans and contribute in report writing.
* Conduct regular field visits to ensure quality implementation and compliance with standards.
* Collect, analyze, and report WASH data using approved tools.
* Document lessons learned, success stories, case studies, and best practices.
* Contribute to baseline, midline, and end-line assessments.
* Document project achievements, challenges, and recommendations.
5. Safeguarding and Risk Management
* Ensure all activities comply with safeguarding, child protection, PSEA, and organizational policies.
* Identify and report risks affecting WASH service delivery and recommend mitigation measures.
* Ensure safety standards are observed during construction and rehabilitation works.
* Remain alert and responsive to any safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding Policy.
Required Experience and Education
* Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Hydraulic Water Supply / Engineering, Environmental Health/environmental Engineering, Public Health, Sanitary Engineering, or related fields.
* A Master's degree is an added advantage
* Minimum of 3 years of experience in WASH programming, preferably in education or humanitarian settings.

* Relevant experience in WASH programming, preferably in education or humanitarian/development settings.
* Knowledge of education in Emergency(EiE) interventions including School WaSH rehabilitation and promotion.
* Experience working with NGOs, UN agencies, or humanitarian organizations.
* Familiarity with the education in Emergency Standards frameworks.
* Experience in school WASH, hygiene promotion, and infrastructure supervision.
* Familiarity with national WASH standards and humanitarian principles is an asset.
* Fluency in English and Amharic; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
* Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work independently and in a team.
* Cultural sensitivity and understanding of refugee issues.
