Africa50 is a specialist infrastructure investor that contributes to Africa's growth by developing and investing in bankable projects, catalysing public sector capital, and mobilizing private sector funding.
Africa50 has raised over US$890 million so far from 33 African governments, the African Development Bank, two African Central Banks and the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and intends to reach a target capitalization of US$3 billion. Africa50 has an independent investment process and seeks to generate commercial risk-adjusted returns for its investments across key infrastructure sectors: energy (including power generation and related parts of the value chain), midstream gas, transportation, ICT, health infrastructure, education and fintech.
Purpose of the Role
As a (Senior) Portfolio Performance Analyst, you will support the team in preparing and/or reviewing valuations in compliance with IFRS and the International Private Equity and Venture Capital Valuation ("IPEV") Guidelines, evaluate and summarize performance of investments and prepare reporting to Africa50's stakeholders. You will also provide effective portfolio management support.
The position sits within the Finance department.
Principal Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Portfolio Performance Manager, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Valuation support:
- Perform and/or review valuations using discounted cash flows (DCF), market multiples, transaction approach and other valuation models (DDM, etc.).
- Compile and/or review documentation to support company comparable assumptions used in valuation models
- Evaluate the cost of capital using the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and its extension such as build-up approach, or expanded CAPM
- Perform a counter-analysis of assumptions used to develop DCF, performance multiples and other valuations.
- Perform a counter-analysis of value creation drivers that have contributed to changes in valuations over the holding period of each investment
- Manage databases for portfolio and valuation financials and consolidate key performance indicators (KPIs)
Portfolio management support:
- Support in monitoring and reviewing the financial and operational performance of investments.
- Contribute to the preparation and coordination of periodic reporting on valuations and investment performance to Management, the Investment Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Support the internal and external audit processes.
- Provide analytical work on portfolio trends, drivers of investments return, and draw and share lessons from portfolio analysis
- Stay up to date on industry trends, market insights, and macroeconomic factors that may affect the company's investments
- Assist in the selection of tools and technology to enhance data management and reporting to support efficient financial reporting.
Other:
- Support the Finance team, from time to time, on other financial management matters of the Company.
- Assist, from time to time, on the Company initiatives and projects on Finance related matters.
Candidate Profile
Required Background
- Four to seven years of relevant experience in private equity, transaction services, valuations, financial analysis or related role.
- Demonstrated academic excellence.
- University degree in Finance, Business Administration or related field.

- Demonstrated experience in emerging markets, Africa a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of business intelligence solutions such as Capital IQ and/or Bloomberg will be an asset
- Culturally sensitive, able to relate to people of diverse backgrounds; living experience in emerging countries is a plus.
