Program Description

The African Leadership Academy (ALA) Engineering Leadership Program, sponsored by Chevron Corporation, is designed for highly motivated and talented high school students across Africa (ages 15 – 18) who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

This intensive program immerses participants in core engineering disciplines and practices as they work in teams to design and build a solution to a relevant, real-world engineering challenge. Participants will be guided by ALA's expert STEM educators, leadership facilitators, and professional engineers.



Key Responsibilities

As an Engineering Mentor, you will:

Support and guide up to 8 participants throughout the duration of the program.
Welcome and receive participants upon arrival on the African Leadership Academy campus.
Coach participants as they tackle the engineering design challenge - facilitating brainstorming, developing concepts, iterating based on feedback, and preparing for the final presentation.
Facilitate specific program sessions (to be assigned).
Support evening activities, non-curricular sessions, and external trips that foster participant bonding and community.
Participate in residential duties, including evening check-ins before quiet time/lights out.
Carry out additional tasks as assigned to ensure the seamless delivery of the program.
Note: This is a fully residential program. Accommodation and meals will be provided for the entire duration. Mentors are required to stay on campus from Monday, 22 June to Saturday, 11 July 2026.



Ideal Candidate Profile

Prior work experience is not required.
Holds (or is currently pursuing) a BSc/MSc in Engineering or a related field.
Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, including teamwork, communication, and leadership.
Resides in Gauteng Province (Johannesburg, Pretoria, or surrounding areas).

22 – 26 June: Training & 28 June – 11 July: Program Delivery

Compensation & Benefits

Fully covered accommodation, meals, and transportation to the program location.
Opportunities to explore Johannesburg through curated site visits and fun activities.
A stipend of R4,400, payable by the end of July 2026.
