Position description
Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and defending journalism in the 21st century, is seeking an audience editor to manage and execute our audience strategy, including newsletter products and our expert-led panels, within the audience team and across the organization to further the impact of our work.

This position reports to our deputy director of audience and collaborates across all internal programs and external stakeholders to ensure that FPF’s advocacy campaigns, digital security expertise, technology projects, and press freedom reporting achieve maximum visibility, reach, and impact.

Responsibilities
• Edit, write, and publish newsletter content, including programmatic newsletters and press-related communications, such as news releases.
• Manage our expert-led panels and other FPF-led events from conception through execution.
• Use audience data, analytics, and external feedback to identify opportunities to expand and improve newsletter and event products, and help develop and launch new offerings.
• Collaborate regularly with internal stakeholders to set editorial priorities and long-term strategy for newsletters and events.
• Track and analyze the performance of newsletter products and events, and regularly share insights on audience growth and engagement.
• Edit video scripts and occasionally contribute to video concept development and scripting.
• Apply strong multimedia editing judgment to adapt and distribute our work across formats and platforms, including newsletters and social media channels (e.g., Mailchimp, LinkedIn, Substack).
• Work with colleagues across the organization to establish best practices for audience engagement and media outreach, while expanding and deepening relationships with readers and journalists who cover press freedom issues.
• Support efforts to grow audiences, converting readers and event attendees into subscribers or supporters, and retain existing audiences through strategic promotion and distribution.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the deputy director, audience.

Qualifications
Required
• Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex reporting and policy issues into clear, concise, and engaging language for diverse audiences and formats.
• Demonstrated ability to grow and engage audiences through a mix of creative experimentation and proven audience-development strategies, particularly through newsletters and other direct-to-audience social formats.
• At least five years of copy editing experience according to AP Style, with a meticulous approach to accuracy and tone, a strong command of editorial standards, and familiarity with adapting to in-house style.
• Two or more years experience producing and managing newsletters for a digital newsroom, nonprofit, or digital rights organization.
• Familiarity with newsletter platforms such as Mailchimp, Substack, or similar tools, along with audience analytics platforms including Google Analytics or comparable systems, and experience working with and publishing through CMSs such as Wagtail.
• Experience creating designs and infographics with tools like Canva.
• Passion for the First Amendment, and a strong commitment to protecting press freedom and the public’s right to know.
• Strong news judgment, and awareness of the political and media landscape affecting journalism and civil liberties.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams, maintaining strong communication and reliability in a remote or hybrid environment.
• Outstanding organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
• Curiosity and adaptability, with a willingness to experiment with new formats, tools, and audience strategies in a rapidly evolving media environment.

Preferred
• Familiarity with digital security concepts relevant to journalism, including encryption and secure newsgathering tools.
• Additional multimedia skills, including video and audio editing, and experience creating illustrations and graphics (Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Canva, or similar tools).
• Fluency in Spanish.
