Location: Goualougo (Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park), Republic of Congo
Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is looking for a Site and Research Manager for the Goualougo research site (GLG) in Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, Republic of Congo. The position reports to the Nouabalé-Ndoki Director of Research and Biomonitoring. It is a full-time contract, and the ideal candidate can commit for a minimum of two years.
The Site and Research Manager will implement and supervise research activities at the site, oversee camp management, ensure communication and reporting on all site activities, and provide scientific training, supervision and capacity building to Research Assistants and students.
Main responsibilities:
- Management of field research: supervise the implementation of research protocols at the GTAP field site; coordinate the fieldwork of all research teams; take part in daily follows and habituation of chimpanzees and gorillas; supervise data collection (behavioral observations, health symptoms using the Animal Observer App, meteorology, SMART, Cybertracker); run reliability tests on data collection; oversee the direct observational health program for gorillas and chimpanzees; train Congolese research staff in reduced-impact ape follow protocols, monitoring techniques, portable data devices, data management and reporting; supervise data entry and backups; ensure the quality of collection, storage, inventory and transport of biological samples.
- Communication and reporting: organize staff schedules and logistics; compile monthly site reports; work with the Congo-Apes Project Co-Directors, Principal Investigators and the NNNP Director of Research and Ecological Monitoring; represent the research team during tourist visits and coordinate with the NNNP/WCS Tourism team.
- Capacity building: support the professional development of research staff, including individual research projects presented nationally and internationally; schedule trainings at the GLG field station and in Bomassa.
- Human resources: conduct annual evaluations of Research Assistants and contribute to the selection of new hires.
- Site management: plan staff rotations, site logistics and maintenance, stock management, communication and operations including visits by researchers, communication teams and donors; ensure ape and staff health protocols are followed; assist in overseeing site infrastructure and construction.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Biological Sciences or extensive relevant conservation field research experience.
- Working proficiency in French and English, oral and written.
- Good knowledge of animal behavior and ecology, and experience managing a remote field site.
- Project management experience (staff supervision, work-planning, reporting).
- Excel/Word required; working knowledge of GIS, SMART and R preferred.
- Field tracking and GPS/compass navigation skills; wilderness first aid training preferred.
- Camera trap research experience preferred.
- Excellent social and communication skills in a multicultural environment, and the ability to live in isolated field camps (solar power, limited satellite internet, no running water).
- Physically fit for forest work in a tropical climate.
- Mechanical, construction and electrical skills and a problem-solving mindset are a plus.
