The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is a not-for-profit healthcare institute offering all medical services under one roof, with a tertiary care hospital in Karachi and a network of secondary care hospitals, medical centers, clinical laboratories and pharmacies across Pakistan. It is accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) as an Academic Medical Centre.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Stadium Road hospital will be responsible for its strategic, operational, financial and quality management in accordance with the mission and policies set by the AKUH-HS leadership. Reporting to the CEO, AKU-HS, the COO will oversee daily operations of the main hospital, ensure it runs efficiently and in alignment with strategic goals, and deliver high-quality patient care while optimizing operational performance.
Responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with the CEO and senior management to develop and execute strategic plans and maintain a quality surveillance and improvement system
- Oversee daily operations of clinical and non-clinical departments
- Develop and implement operational policies, procedures and standards
- Work with Chairs and Vice Chairs, Clinical to meet goals and develop alternative models of practice and referral links
- Promote continuous improvement and quality assurance; monitor performance metrics to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction and safety
- Represent the hospital at board meetings, donor functions and community forums; build relationships with stakeholders
- Oversee implementation of new technologies, including electronic health records and other IT systems
- Build strategic alliances with external organizations and identify growth opportunities
- Manage the hospital budget, ensure financial sustainability and implement cost-control measures
- Foster a positive work environment and ensure HR policy compliance
- Oversee patient safety programmes and compliance with healthcare regulations, accreditation standards and audits
- Lead the hospital's response to emergencies and crises
Requirements:
- Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration or a relevant discipline
- At least fifteen years of progressive leadership experience in reputed teaching healthcare institutions, preferably with international affairs experience in global healthcare organizations
- Experience in healthcare quality management and patient-centered services
- In-depth knowledge of financial management of university teaching hospitals/health systems in developing countries, including budgeting and forecasting
- Proven track record of managing complex hospital operations
- Strong leadership, interpersonal and strategic thinking skills
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation standards
- Ability to drive change and lead multidisciplinary teams
- Willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed
