IRRI is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science and protecting the rice-growing environment. Working with national and international partners, the Climate Change Specialist will coordinate research projects and expand the research portfolio on climate change mitigation and adaptation within rice-based agri-food systems across Asia, including piloting and scaling climate-smart technologies. The role sits at the interface of agronomic and economic research, covering carbon markets, monitoring/reporting/verification (MRV) systems, and value chain sustainability. Responsibilities include leading applied research on mitigation and adaptation technologies, designing and evaluating strategies for large-scale adoption of low-emission technologies, supporting MRV tool development, performing economic and policy analyses, developing research proposals and publications, liaising with donors, facilitating science-policy dialogues, and contributing to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) efforts. Based at IRRI's Vietnam Office in Hanoi, open to international applicants. Requires a PhD in Agronomy, Social Sciences, Economics, or Geography (or related field) and a minimum of three years of relevant experience researching climate change in agriculture, preferably in a developing country context. Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams, strong understanding of GHG emissions/accounting in agriculture, and experience in Southeast Asia are required; Vietnamese language skills are a plus.
