The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of two years and very good prospects for extension. The employment location is Kabul, Afghanistan.
As Country Director, you are responsible for developing and managing an impact-oriented country programme that makes a relevant contribution to the development of the country, taking into account the specific challenges of Afghanistan. You lead the WHH team in the country, working in line with the new global WHH strategy (2025-2030), the organisational mandate and WHH quality standards. You will ensure WHH is recognised as a competent partner in relevant humanitarian and development policy dialogues, and as part of Welthungerhilfe's global leadership team you contribute actively to organisational performance and learning.
Responsibilities: overall responsibility for the development, implementation and adaptation of the country strategy; ensuring sound financial management of allocated funds; ensuring acquisition and diversification of funding from private and institutional donors; setting up country structures and processes adhering to WHH procedures and quality standards with special attention to security management; managing expatriate and national project staff and ensuring compliance with security regulations; positioning WHH in the country context and maintaining and expanding cooperation with national and international partners; regular exchange of information with Head Office in Bonn and other Country Offices; observing, analysing and reporting on relevant trends in Afghanistan; and updating and ensuring application of the preparedness plan for disasters and potential crises.
Profile: a university degree in a relevant field such as International Development Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, Management, Geography or Agricultural Sciences, or a legal background; at least 8 years of project management experience and relevant leadership experience in international humanitarian aid and development cooperation, preferably in Afghanistan or the region; excellent HR management skills, cultural sensitivity and excellent negotiation skills; coordination and organisational skills under high workload; sound experience in security and crisis management; experience in localisation and working with partner organisations in a very restricted context; an evidence-based approach to data; readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for travel to Welthungerhilfe's project countries; and a very good command of English, spoken and written, with German an asset.
