One Acre Fund, founded in 2006, equips 5.5 million smallholder farmers across nine African countries with high-quality farm supplies, tree seedlings, accessible credit, modern agronomic training and other agricultural services. Its Kenya program operates under the local brand Tupande, with close to 500 staff in Kakamega headquarters supporting 1,747 field staff serving more than 1 million farmers.
About the Role: The Compliance Specialist owns the biochar facility's Compliance function, combining leadership of the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) programme with responsibility for facility Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) programme design and oversight. The role designs and runs the data system that captures feedstock, production, quality and end-use data to the standard required by the external verifier, and serves as the primary interface with external verifiers, auditors and regulators (NEMA, DOSH, third-party carbon verifiers). Reports to the Biochar Lead.
Responsibilities include: designing and maintaining the facility's HSE programme (risk registers, emergency response plans, safety-critical procedures); delivering HSE training, inductions, toolbox talks and drills; ensuring PPE, signage and site safety infrastructure; coordinating third-party HSE testing and audits; designing and managing the MRV system covering feedstock inputs, production outputs, quality measurements and carbon removal calculations; ensuring data collection is accurate, consistent and traceable to the relevant carbon standards; overseeing Lab and Quality Technicians' data recording; maintaining data management systems, dashboards and reporting templates; acting as primary contact during verification and audit cycles; preparing monthly and quarterly reports for carbon credit verification; owning corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) through to closure; training staff on MRV and HSE requirements; and developing training materials for field staff on biochar application methods and point-of-delivery data collection.
Qualifications: Degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Data Science, Agronomy or a related field; minimum 3 years of experience in HSE, compliance, audit or environmental data management; strong background in HSE, OSHA (Kenya, 2007), ISO or comparable regulatory environments an advantage; comfort engaging third-party auditors and verifiers; familiarity with carbon standards (Isometric, Puro.earth, EBC, IBI) a plus but not required; strong data management, reporting and analytical skills; high attention to detail and commitment to data integrity and safety discipline; fluent in English, with East African experience an advantage.
