Deutsche Welle is seeking correspondents / video journalists (f/m/d) for Dari/Pashto for programming in Islamabad, Pakistan, as of 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible, on the basis of a freelance contract limited to two years. To expand DW's presence and coverage in Pakistan, we are looking for journalists with multimedia expertise to report for Dari/Pashto from Pakistan and the region.
Role: independent research, planning and realization of journalistic pieces from Pakistan and the region, focusing on political, social and security related topics and their impact on Afghanistan and Pashto/Dari speaking audiences; production of digital-first content for social media with a focus on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook (scriptwriting, shooting, moderation, editing, subtitling, post-production); creating reports, interviews, background pieces, explainers and short-form content, both in consultation with the editorial team in Bonn and based on own pitches; producing video content for online, social media and TV, conducting live broadcasts and live stand-ups during current events and providing rapid, independent breaking-news coverage; building and maintaining a network of political decision-makers, government agencies, academia, civil society, international organizations and Afghan and Pakistani communities; monitoring political, social and digital developments in Pakistan and Afghanistan to identify relevant trends and topics; working closely with the editorial team in Bonn and correspondents from other DW language departments.
Profile: university degree in journalism, media or communication studies or equivalent, with several years of professional journalistic experience, ideally as a correspondent or video journalist in an international setting; in-depth knowledge of political, social and security developments in Pakistan and Afghanistan; experience with live reporting and strong on-camera presence; demonstrated experience in independent multimedia production from research, camera operation and moderation through editing and publication, including platform-specific content for TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube; experience in mobile journalism (MoJo) and with professional camera, audio and lighting equipment; proficiency with video editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro) and social media and content management systems; proficient written and spoken Pashto or Dari (min. C1) and very good English (min. B2), with German an advantage; ability to work independently under time pressure with strong teamwork skills; willingness to travel within Pakistan and, security permitting, to Afghanistan and the region.
