This competition seeks a motivated self-starter Post-Doctoral Fellow to work on the EU Horizon project MARVELA, focused on non-CO2 emissions monitoring, mitigation and demonstration. The work includes setting up field trials, associated lab work and taking field measurements in a range of weather conditions, and publication of results. It also involves working and communicating in written and oral English with 16 other EU partners, and the coordination and execution of work package responsibilities including report writing and occasional international travel. The position includes driving vehicles.
The post is based in the Environment, Soils and Land Use Department at the Teagasc National Agricultural Sustainability Research and Innovation Centre, Johnstown Castle, Wexford — Ireland's leading centre for soils and environmental research. Appointees to a Teagasc Post-Doctoral Fellowship undertake a Level 9 Professional Diploma in Researcher Development delivered by University College Dublin (UCD), a blended, mostly online modular programme developing competencies in research, professionalism, communication and career development.
Duties: build positive working relationships with the 16 MARVELA partners across 7 EU countries; plan and execute field experiments measuring nitrate leaching, ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions with animal manures, fertiliser, nitrification inhibitors and lime; ensure protocols, health and safety and quality control, maintain an organised database, write up and publish results; lead two key project work packages on mitigation measures and database refinement; ensure Teagasc deliverables and reports to the EU Commission are delivered on time; interpret and disseminate research findings to scientific and popular audiences.
Essential: PhD in Agricultural, Environmental, Atmospheric emissions, Plant or Soil Science; relevant research experience not exceeding 3 years post-PhD; demonstrated expertise in managing large research projects, non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen leaching and cycling, stakeholder engagement and demonstration; evidence of research activity (publications, conference presentations, awards) and future scholarly output; excellent project management, analytical, report writing and data analysis skills; ability to collaborate with team members and PhD students; excellent communication skills. Desirable: database management software; train-the-trainer material and video dissemination; new farm-scale emissions measurement techniques; experience working directly with farmers; setting own research agenda.
