CADEX Consultant: Perioperative Nursing Technical Expert – The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (in-country placement + remote engagement). Host Agency: Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS). Duration: 100 working days over 5 months (3 in-country and 2 remote) between September 2026 and February 2027. Compensation: CAD $500-700 per day, commensurate with experience, plus international airfare.

The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKHD) is a tertiary healthcare facility with expanded clinical programs including cardiology, women's and children's health, oncology, neurosciences, surgery, orthopedics, urology, ENT, laparoscopic surgery, diagnostic imaging, intensive care, and trauma care.
Consultancy summary: As surgical services expand in complexity and volume, AKHD seeks technical assistance to strengthen perioperative nursing practice, leadership capability and competency-based skills development within the Operating Theatre (OT) environment. The expert will assess perioperative nursing competencies, training needs, and patient safety practices across all surgical specialties and recommend competency-based development, mentorship, and sustainable workforce planning.
Responsibilities and scope:
- Baseline Assessment: comprehensive assessment of OT and perioperative nursing services covering workforce capability, competency systems, leadership structures, patient safety processes, quality monitoring, and OT-CSSD collaboration. Deliverable: baseline assessment and gap analysis report.
- Professional Practice and Competency Development: review and strengthen perioperative nursing roles, standards of practice, competency frameworks, orientation programmes, clinical skills validation, and mentorship systems.
- Leadership Development and Mentorship: coaching and mentorship for perioperative nursing leaders, preceptors, and future leaders in leadership, workforce management, quality improvement, and change management.
- Patient Safety and Quality Improvement: strengthen surgical safety practices, clinical handovers, incident management, infection prevention, recovery room safety, and quality monitoring; develop audit framework and quality indicators.
- Systems and Process Improvement: optimize perioperative workflows, theatre utilization, equipment and instrument management, documentation, communication systems, and OT/CSSD interfaces.
- Sustainability and Capacity Building: knowledge transfer through coaching, local champions, educational resources, and succession planning.
Reporting: The Technical Expert works under the overall direction of the Director of Nursing Services, collaborating with the Theatre Nurse Manager and other nurse managers, OT/CSSD Programme Administrator, Quality Department, Infection Prevention and Control Team, Anaesthesia Department, and surgeons across specialities.
Required qualifications and experience: Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's degree in nursing; minimum 10 years of perioperative nursing experience; minimum 5 years in a perioperative nursing leadership role; demonstrated experience in nursing skills development, competency-based training and education, leadership development, and quality and patient safety improvement. Experience in a tertiary healthcare institution and in mentoring and coaching nursing leaders would be assets. English proficiency required; Kiswahili would be an asset.
