CIMMYT is a non-profit international organization dedicated to fostering improved quantity, quality and dependability of production systems and basic cereals such as maize, wheat, triticale, sorghum and millets through applied agricultural science, particularly in the Global South. CIMMYT is hosted by World Agroforestry (ICRAF), a member of CGIAR headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya.
CIMMYT is looking for Field Assistants at Kiboko to support the research technicians with planting, agronomic management, harvesting of field trials and nurseries, seed processing and packaging, and supervision of casual labor.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Seed processing, packaging and storage: support timely seed processing (shelling, drying, weighing, packaging) for storage and preparation for nurseries and trials.
- Planting and management of trials and nurseries: support planting of nurseries and optimal, biotic and abiotic stress trials (managed low N, managed drought, artificial FAW infested); carry out proper agronomic practices such as timely weeding, fertilizer application and pest control; ensure FAW control measures, irrigation and rouging off-types as required.
- Data collection, pollination and harvesting: support timely data collection using hand-held electronic devices; support pollination of crossing and selfing nurseries; support harvesting and collection of harvest-time data.
- Supervision of casual labor: lead teams of casual laborers in field operations for increased efficiency and accountability.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in agriculture.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
- At least three (3) years of practical experience in an agricultural research setting, with demonstrated expertise in planting trials and nurseries, data collection using electronic devices, pollination in crossing and seed increase nurseries, management of trials and nurseries, and seed preparation.
Terms: Locally Recruited Staff (LRS) position. The appointment will be for two (2) years, inclusive of a six-month probationary period, with possibility of extension. Duty station is Kiboko, Kenya. Employment contracts are issued under ICRAF in compliance with Kenyan labour law, with a non-contributory pension scheme, comprehensive medical insurance and paid leave.
