Thomson Media is recruiting a Programme Manager to lead the delivery of media development and grants activities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as part of the AGILE project.
This role will oversee programme design, team management, budgeting and compliance, working across a multi-country portfolio to support independent media and strengthen sustainability.
We’re looking for candidates with strong experience in programme management, donor-funded projects and operational delivery, ideally within media or international development.
BACKGROUND
This role is part of AGILE Workstream 3: Sustainable Business Models, which includes the Resilience Incubator, Strategic Adaptability Support, and Innovation Grants aimed at strengthening independent media in South and Central America, East Africa, Southeast and Central Asia. The second iteration of the Resilience Incubator and the following activities will be conducted in Africa: in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead design and optimisation of project management systems aligned with organisational goals.
- Recruit and manage Country Coordinators and project teams, ensuring effective and compliant delivery.
- Oversee project planning, resources, budgets, and timelines to meet quality and impact targets.
- Monitor financial performance, support reporting and audits, and ensure donor compliance.
- Improve operational processes (logistics, payments, workflows, data management).
- Coordinate across teams to ensure smooth implementation, documentation, and reporting.
- Track performance, prepare narrative reports, and communicate project impact and success stories.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- 5+ years’ experience in programme/project management, grants, budgeting, and donor compliance.
- Proven experience managing teams, recruitment, reporting, and monitoring & evaluation.
- Strong organisational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work across cultures and coordinate diverse stakeholders.
- Financial management experience.
- Excellent English; Swahili is an advantage.
- Knowledge of media/journalism sector and African media landscape is a plus.
- Relevant degree (journalism, communications, international relations, or similar).
LOCATION
Covers Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Mostly remote, with occasional in-country travel required.
