Professional Experience:
Jan. 2023 to present: Consultant for CERS-EXPLORERS (www.cers.org.hk), a charitable organization based in Hong Kong with operations in the highlands of China and the border regions in and around that fields exploration expeditions, carries out research in geography and related fields, pioneers cultural conservation projects and implements experiential education programs for university and advanced high school students. Currently working half-time as research scientist, educator, editor and advisor.
January 2012 to Jan. 2023: Research/Program Director for CERS-EXPLORERS.
October 2007 to January 2012: Program Director for THE BRIDGE FUND,. (www.bridgefund.org), a US NGO managing development projects in western China. Based in China. Included work as Chief of Party for USAID and EC grants.
July 2007 through September 2007: Interim Chief Executive Officer for the CHINA EXPLORATION & RESEARCH SOCIETY (CERS), Hong Kong.
June 2002 through June 2007: China Programme Manager and Indochina Primate Conservation Programme Co-ordinator for FAUNA AND FLORA INTERNATIONAL (www.fauna-flora.org). Based in Beijing, China and Hanoi. Seconded for consulting work, 2004-2005, International Protected Areas Management Advisor for the China Global Environment Facility Protected Areas Management Project Office, attached to the Division of Nature Reserves, Ministry of Forestry, Beijing, China for the WORLD BANK-GEF CHINA SUSTAINABLE FOREST DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (6 months of input); and 2005-07, WORLD BANK GEF GUANGXI INTEGRATED FOREST CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT, first as member of the planning team for PDF-B planning mission (3 months input), then as International Management Planning Expert (150 days input).
October 2000 through March 2002: Human Resources Development Advisor for the SABAH WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT, Kota Kinabalu Malaysia, retained under a Danish government (DANCED) sponsored project by Nordeco Consultants Copenhagen.
1998 - 2000: Field Scientist for the CHINA EXPLORATION AND RESEARCH SOCIETY, Hong Kong. Principle Investigator of the Tibetan Antelope Conservation Project. From July 1998 to September 2000.
1998: Consultant for WORLD-WIDE FUND FOR NATURE (WWF) China Programme Office, Beijing, China, for a nature conservation capacity building initiative. Four months from March, 1998.
1996-1998: International Training Course Development Advisor for the GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT FACILITY NATURE RESERVE MANAGEMENT PROJECT OFFICE, as a Resident Foreign Expert attached to the Division of Nature Reserves, Ministry of Forestry, Beijing, China for the World Bank-GEF China Nature Reserve Management Programme. From May, 1996 to February, 1998.
